High-Quality Penetration Grade Bitumen

Penetration Grade Bitumen

Bernet Bitumen manufactures premium Penetration Grade Bitumen engineered for durable, flexible performance in road construction, waterproofing, and industrial applications. Produced from carefully refined crude oil feedstocks, our penetration grades deliver consistent adhesion, workability, and long-term resistance to deformation and aging in diverse climates. All grades are produced under rigorous quality control and conform to international standards for penetration bitumen.

What Is Penetration Grade Bitumen?

Penetration Grade Bitumen is classified by the depth a standard needle penetrates the binder at 25°C in controlled conditions. Lower numbers indicate harder binders suited to hot climates and heavy loads; higher numbers indicate softer binders suited to cooler regions and flexible pavement needs. This simple, reliable classification helps specifiers match binder stiffness to climate, traffic, and mix design.

Typical uses include:

  • Hot-mix asphalt for base, binder, and wearing courses
  • Surface dressing and maintenance treatments
  • Roofing/waterproofing membranes and protective coatings

Comprehensive Range of Penetration Grade Bitumen

Below are our standard penetration grades. Each section provides a short technical overview, indicative property ranges, typical applications, and standards. Where projects require tighter tolerances, we provide custom production and technical support.

Bitumen 10/20

Overview: A hard paving grade for high-temperature regions and very heavy traffic. Offers excellent rutting and deformation resistance, making it suitable for airports, expressways, and industrial pavements.
Indicative properties: Penetration typically sits in the 10–20 (0.1 mm) band at 25°C, with a softening point generally around the high-60s °C (often near 60–70°C). Viscosity is high at service temperatures, while ductility at 25°C typically exceeds 100 cm, maintaining elasticity under repeated load.
Typical applications: Base and binder courses in hot climates; heavy-duty pavements; high-shear intersections and toll plazas.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 35/50

Overview: A semi-hard grade balancing stiffness and flexibility for temperate to warm climates. Strong aggregate adhesion supports durable mixes under sustained traffic.
Indicative properties: Penetration around 35–50, with a softening point commonly ~50–60°C. Exhibits good workability during mixing/compaction and reliable cohesion in dense-graded asphalt.
Typical applications: Highways, DBM and binder courses, heavy-traffic urban roads; also suitable for waterproofing layers.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 40/50

Overview: A stiff, high-performance grade for warm climates and heavy axle loads, where rutting control and durability are critical.
Indicative properties: Penetration 40–50 with softening point typically in the mid-50s to low-60s °C. Provides high cohesion and controlled temperature susceptibility, supporting durable binder/wearing courses.
Typical applications: Expressways, bus corridors, industrial yards, heavy-duty binder and wearing courses.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 50/70

Overview: A widely specified grade offering balanced stiffness and flexibility for a broad range of climates and traffic conditions.
Indicative properties: Penetration 50–70, softening point commonly ~48–56°C. Ensures reliable compaction, strong adhesion to mineral aggregates, and robust in-service durability.
Typical applications: Dense-graded asphalt wearing and binder courses, SMA mixes (when used with proper fibers), and standard highway pavements.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 50/90

Overview: A versatile grade bridging medium and softer binders, favored where seasonal temperature swings and mixed traffic require added flexibility without sacrificing stability.
Indicative properties: Penetration 50–90, softening point typically around the high-40s to mid-50s °C. Good low-temperature flexibility with dependable adhesion and workability.
Typical applications: Wearing and binder courses in variable climates; maintenance overlays; waterproofing layers needing balanced flexibility.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 60/70

Overview: A global workhorse grade for general highway construction, combining compactability, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
Indicative properties: Penetration 60–70, softening point commonly ~49–56°C. Exhibits consistent viscosity for plant mixing, reliable compaction, and stable in-service performance.
Typical applications: Wearing courses, binder layers, and standard hot-mix asphalt across temperate and warm climates.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 60/90

Overview: A flexibility-leaning medium grade designed for regions with moderate to cool nights or where additional relaxation reduces thermal cracking risk.
Indicative properties: Penetration 60–90, softening point generally in the high-40s to mid-50s °C. Maintains good ductility and adhesion while preserving sufficient stiffness for traffic loads.
Typical applications: Binder/wearing courses in mixed climates; overlays and maintenance layers; flexible waterproofing systems.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 70/80

Overview: A medium-soft grade for cooler pavements where flexibility and crack resistance are prioritized without compromising adhesion.
Indicative properties: Penetration 70–80, softening point typically ~45–52°C. Offers stable workability at plant temperatures and sustained ductility at service temperatures.
Typical applications: Wearing courses in cooler regions; flexible overlays; waterproofing membranes needing added compliance.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 70/100

Overview: A softer medium grade that provides enhanced low-temperature flexibility, reducing the potential for thermal cracking in cooler climates.
Indicative properties: Penetration 70–100, softening point generally in the low- to mid-40s °C. Maintains strong adhesion and cohesive strength while supporting good fatigue resistance.
Typical applications: Flexible pavements in cooler areas; overlays and surface dressing; waterproofing layers subject to thermal movement.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 80/100

Overview: A soft grade favored for cool climates and mixes where additional binder flexibility is beneficial for crack control.
Indicative properties: Penetration 80–100, softening point typically ~42–50°C. Good ductility and adhesion contribute to longer fatigue life under repeated load.
Typical applications: Wearing courses in cooler regions; open-graded mixes; waterproofing systems requiring compliant membranes.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 100/120

Overview: A soft, flexible binder supporting low-temperature crack resistance and ease of compaction in cooler environments.
Indicative properties: Penetration 100–120, softening point often in the low-40s °C. Provides excellent workability and aggregate coating with reliable adhesion.
Typical applications: Binder/wearing courses in cool climates; thin overlays; waterproofing layers where thermal movement is expected.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.

Bitumen 200/300

Overview: A very soft grade typically used in cold regions or specialized applications where maximum flexibility and low-temperature performance are required.
Indicative properties: Penetration 200–300, softening point usually in the high-30s to low-40s °C. Offers excellent coating and compaction at lower temperatures, with strong ductility.
Typical applications: Cold-region pavements; specific industrial/waterproofing uses; preparatory blends where softer base binder is required.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D946, EN 12591, and IS 73.
