What Is AC Grade Bitumen?
Asphalt Cement (AC) Bitumen is viscosity-graded based on measurements at 60°C (mixing) and 135°C (compaction), similar to the Viscosity Grade system but expressed in absolute viscosity units. This ensures each grade behaves predictably during production and service.
The AC system is widely used in North America and other regions following AASHTO or ASTM specifications. Lower grades (AC-2.5, AC-5) are softer and suitable for cooler conditions; higher grades (AC-20, AC-30) are stiffer for hot climates and heavy traffic.

Bitumen AC-10
Overview: A medium-consistency asphalt cement suitable for moderate traffic and temperate climates, offering reliable adhesion and workability.
Indicative properties: Viscosity at 60°C typically ranges between 1000 and 2000 poise, providing balanced flexibility and stiffness. Softening point around 48–55°C, ductility greater than 75 cm, and flash point above 220°C.
Typical applications: Used in hot-mix asphalt for urban and regional roads, binder courses, and bituminous macadam mixes.
Standards: Conforms to ASTM D3381 and AASHTO M226 (AC-10).
Bitumen AC-20
Overview: A stiffer, high-performance binder designed for heavy traffic and warm climates. Provides excellent rutting resistance and long-term pavement stability.
Indicative properties: Viscosity at 60°C approximately 2000–3000 poise, softening point around 50–58°C, and ductility above 60 cm. Maintains strong adhesion and resistance to aging.
Typical applications: Used in highways, expressways, industrial roads, and runway pavements under hot conditions.

Bitumen AC-30
Overview: A hard asphalt cement binder recommended for extremely hot climates and high-load infrastructure such as container terminals and heavy industrial pavements.
Indicative properties: Viscosity at 60°C typically ranges from 3000 to 4000 poise, with softening point 55–65°C and flash point above 230°C. Exhibits strong rutting and fatigue resistance with reliable cohesion.
Typical applications: Ideal for high-temperature pavement structures, airfields, and high-stress binder/wearing courses.
